Turnkey services: Energy Storage Systems

Given its areas of expertise, it is no surprise that Team Electric Group has taken a leading role in enabling the wider use of zero-emission battery technology in ship operations.

Landmark references include retrofitting a substantially larger Energy Storage System on board Tycho Brahe - the all-electric 1,250-passenger capacity ForSea ferry which operates on the 20-minute crossing between Helsingborg in Sweden and Helsingør in Denmark.

The largest battery pack ever installed on a ferry at the time of the retrofit, work required the removal of four existing containers and their replacement with two new battery compartments, which were purpose-built by Team Electric and installed at the Öresund Drydock.

With the battery system and its supporting infrastructure needing to be upgraded from 4.2MWh to 6.7MWh, the project nonetheless demanded that the ESS occupied no additional space on board the 12,000 GT vessel. Team Electric specialists took responsibility for:

  • Electrical installation including all connection work to the vessel systems
  • Installation of 408 batteries in 36 stacks in each battery house (batteries delivered by customer)
  • Installation of battery pack control units and all cabinets

The first part of this project also demanded finding ways to overcome the extraordinary challenges brought for supply chain and engineering management by the Covid-19 pandemic. From the Team Electric perspective, another notable feature was the sheer scope of work entrusted to its turnkey engineers by the owner. Working in close collaboration with ForeSea and Öresund Drydock, Team Electric project management also covered:

  • Ship-specific design specifications
  • Steel Structure
  • A60 insulation and Surface treatment
  • Complete HVAC delivery
  • Firefighting system (Novec 1230)
  • All Safety systems
  • Sprinkler system
  • Cooling water piping
